A Lesson in Dedication and Growth from a dentist

Ever had a chance meeting that makes you step back and reassess your priorities? This week, I had a conversation with one of my Airbnb tenants that I won't soon forget. A successful dentist who made a fortune over the last seven months in Waco, he spends his days improving his skills, his health, and his mind. He spends 3 hours every day after work studying for his next surgery. He's not even in school anymore, but he loves learning and he continues to want to be better.

I was amazed to learn that after a full day's work, he dedicates an additional three hours to prepare for his upcoming surgeries. Then, another hour at least at the gym. Not because he has to, but because he loves learning and wants to continue growing professionally. His dedication doesn't stop there - his weekends are often packed with trips back to Houston, a testament to his commitment to maintaining close ties with his friends.

One of the things that struck me about his approach to life was his respect for mentorship. He has a knack for positioning himself amongst people he admires, allowing him to continuously learn from those around him.

"You have to do something to prove to the mentor that you're not just some hack trying to test the waters; if you're trying to get a mentor, show some promise by going the extra mile in something and hoping that catches their attention."

His commitment to health and fitness was also inspiring. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were all confined to our homes, he used that time to get in the best shape of his life. He told me about the hours he spent locked away, studying and working out - a testament to his incredible drive and ambition. He told me about how he would basically lock himself in a dungeon for hours and hours and hours just to study because otherwise he wouldn't be able to focus. That's the kind of drive and ambition I want to have.

As I listened to his stories, I couldn't help but feel inspired. His humility, dedication, and down-to-earth nature were a reminder that success doesn't mean sacrificing your personality or your values. It's hard to stay motivated, so it's nice to get a reminder that it is possible to be successful, humble, and to enjoy your life from a real life person.

It's conversations like these, and people like my friend Hunter, that motivate me to continuously strive for better. Hunter, a marketing and business whizz, shares a similar work ethic to my dentist tenant, and it's their commitment to personal growth that keeps me inspired.

As I worked on my rebrand and content creation for my new site, I realized the importance of a balanced life - focusing on health, sleep, diet, and work. While it's easy to lose yourself in work, especially when pursuing an ambitious goal, it's crucial to remember that personal growth isn't just about professional success, it's about leading a balanced, fulfilling life.

As I head off to meet Hunter at 8AM after finishing this blog post at 2:30AM, I am reminded of the journey ahead. It's long, yes, but with the right mindset and balance, success is inevitable. Goodnight.
